Gambia: Yahya Jammeh agrees to step down, leave the country

Jammeh exile

Gambia’s defiant leader, Yahya Jammeh who ruled the West African country for 22 years and refused to leave power after losing the Presidential election to Barrow on December 1st, finally agreed to step down and go into exile, a senior advisor to new President Adama Barrow said on Friday.

The new president, Barrow who was sworn-in on Thursday at The Gambian embassy in Senegal confirmed in his twitter handle that the former leader has agreed to step down, and stated that Jammeh will depart Gambia soon. He could not say where Jammeh would go into exile.

The news came as regional armies, who entered Gambian territory late on Thursday, were poised to remove Jammeh by force just hours after the army chief recognised Barrow as commander-in-chief.

Barrow won the Dec. 1 poll by a slim margin. After he was sworn into office, immediately called for regional and international support.

Barrow to crowd gathered at Dakar hotel on Friday, said: "The rule of fear has been banished from Gambia for good and to all of you forced by political circumstances to flee our country, you now have the liberty to return home."
